Keynote 9:30 am to 10:30 am

November 2, 2022 09:30

Sam Demma is a 22-year-old author, keynote speaker, social entrepreneur, and the founder of Empty Your Backpack — A national movement helping youth recognize their potential and redefine their self-worth. His commitment to helping others started when he was a senior in high school. At 17-years-old, Sam co-founded PickWaste, a grassroots initiative that mobilized youth to pick up garbage in their communities. This program provided over 6000 meaningful volunteer hours to students in his local community. Since its origins in 2017, approximately 300 cleanups have been completed
and over 3000 garbage bags have been filled with litter. That experience confirmed how small, consistent actions could have a significant impact, and he lives that message in
all he does.
After three career ending injuries, Sam hung up his soccer cleats and chose to pursue a path that would make a positive impact on others. After making that decision, Sam dropped out of university and started multiple initiatives that encourage kindness, service and self belief. As a keynote speaker, Sam has delivered over 300 keynote presentations. His young age makes him extremely relatable to youth audiences and utterly inspiring for adults. His unforgettable and entertaining presentation style has reached thousands of students across North America and his High Performing Student Seminars have made a difference for young people in six countries. Sams’ journey has been covered by CBC, iHeartRadio, Global News, CityNews, CTV, Breakfast
Television, Your Morning Show, and on the TEDx platform, twice.
As a result of Sam’s keynote presentations students and educators often share that they will begin taking more acts of kindness, start taking small, consistent actions towards their personal goals and proactively look for ways in which they can be of
service to others. In his spare time, you can find Sam dancing the bachata, eating handfuls of tacos or volunteering as the youngest board director of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers. Sam believes that every student can change their
beliefs, chase their dreams and create a life of meaning. There’s no limit to where small actions will take this big thinker.

Think about it...

Whether we're applying for a post-sec program, an internship, or a volunteer opportunity, we're all told the same thing.

We're told to focus on having good grades, a good resume, and some extra-curriculars.

In theory, it makes sense.

But when you put yourselves in the shoes of the admissions officer, or hiring manager...

Everybody starts to look the same.

So how do you stand out? And actually get their attention?

Join this session to learn 3 specific, and actionable strategies you can use today to win more opportunities, tell a story of what makes you different, and stand out where it matters the most.

Mining Matters works to cultivate enthusiasm for Earth science and build mineral literacy through STEM education. STEM education encourages hands-on experience, exploration, observation, inquiry, place-based learning and a focus on career choices. It provides students with the opportunity to gain and apply relevant, “real world” knowledge, in the classroom. Mining Matters raises awareness of opportunities in geoscience, engineering, mineral resources, environment and sustainability that inspire students to use and gain knowledge in exciting ways.

Our workshop will start off with a general introduction to Ericsson and what the company has to offer. This will be followed by a brief presentation and explanation of Linux/Unix and some useful and important commands such as ls, pwd, man, chmod etc. After gaining some introductory knowledge on the topic we will host a fun and interactive workshop activity which will allow students to demonstrate what they know and learn on the go. Without giving it away, the activity will involve diagrams, visuals, code snippets, and interactive questions ranging from multiple choice to fill in the blanks. There will even be a unique opportunity at the end for some of the more enthusiastic students to write their own code to a problem presented for a chance to win an exciting prize.
